The American College of Radiology and the American College of Cardiology are making their Appropriate Use Criteria for advanced imaging services available to the Hawaii Medical Association membership. The criteria are delivered through a web portal developed by National Decision Support Company, the exclusive authorized licensing agent for ACR Select, the digitally consumable version of the ACR AC(r) and other respected criteria sources.

ACR Select is used widely across the country, helping to educate ordering clinicians on the best test to order. In many cases, it is an alternative to the problematic prior authorization processes enforced by radiology benefits managers. Evidence-based clinical decision support tools like this will be a requirement for ordering advanced imaging for Medicare patients, beginning 2018.

The ACR Select web portal is an easy to use web site that allows healthcare providers to consult the appropriate use criteria  to determine the most appropriate procedure for a patient’s condition.

While ACR Select serves an educational purpose, HMA members should also use the tool, where a prior authorization request is denied by an RBM, to determine if the request is in fact appropriate.  If it is, then a print out of the exam, scenario and score could be submitted to the health plan for adjudication.

We encourage you to access this portal when considering advanced imaging for your patients.
