How to Become an Accredited CME Provider
  • Register

Accreditation is official recognition by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or by a state medical association that an overall program of continuing medical education for physicians substantially complies with accepted standards for planning, implementing, and evaluating CME activities. The Hawaii Medical Association (HMA) is recognized by the ACCME as the intrastate accrediting body for the state of Hawaii.The HMA CME FAC may accredit the following types of organizations:

  • Health Care Facility
  • County Medical Society
  • Hospital
  • Voluntary Health Organization
  • Specialty Society
  • Other organizations

An organization must provide continuing medical education activities on a regular and recurring basis in the State of Hawaii and the PacificBasin. Participants are primarily from the State of Hawaii and the PacificBasin. There is no minimum annual number of CME activities required for accreditation. However, an organization must:

  • Develop an overall CME program utilizing the Essential Areas, Elements and Policies and have established a track record of providing CME activities either on its own, or in conjunction with another organization that is accredited to provide category 1 CME activities. In order to establish this record, an organization may plan and implement educational activities utilizing the Essential Areas, Elements and Policies without granting any CME category 1 credit(s).
  • Demonstrate an overall commitment to its continuing medical education program, including staffing, physician support, budget, and record-keeping.
  • Comply with HMA CME FAC policies and ACCME Essential Areas and Elements.
  • Plan to continue to offer at least one or more educational activities per year. An organization whose overall CME program consists of an occasional CME activity or whose target audience is on a national scale may find it more feasible to seek joint sponsorship through the Hawaii Consortium of Continuing Medical Education.

An organization is ineligible if:

  • Its programs are devoted to advocacy of unscientific modalities of diagnosis and treatment;
  • Its programs are only through recorded material (printed matter, syllabi, video/audio tapes, textbooks, etc); or
  • Greater than thirty percent (30%) of its program participants are from out of the States of Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California, or the PacificBasin.

Organizations not eligible for accreditation by the HMA CME FAC may seek accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
